Le Tissier Geordie-slaying brilliance

There was lots of good goalkeeping in the Premier League yesterday, but not much in the way of spectacular goals. So, to tide us over in the meantime, here’s some vintage Matt Le Tissier from ‘93.

Southampton legend Le Tissier scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United that day. The match-winning strike in the video hit the back of the net three minutes from time. And what a way to win a match!

Each touch en route to goal just serves to confirm his genius: flicking the ball out from behind his back; ghosting by the first defender; lobbing the second and passing the ball into the corner of the net… Brilliant. And not dissimilar to this Davie Cooper strike for Rangers.

Old Bill baiting

FC United of Manchester fans taunt the local constabulary during an FA Cup match against Nuneaton Town.

Fair play to Mr Policeman for reacting with a smile instead of CS spray. Pinching a helmet elsewhere in the world would produce a totally different police response. Based on this video, I don’t think I’d like to try it in Brazil.

German refereeing efficiency

Before we go any further, let’s just say that there’s a tiny danger this video will make you want to referee football matches…

It’s flamboyant yellow card action from the 2. Bundesliga at the weekend. Mainz and Saint Pauli are upstaged by the man in black.

Thomas Metzen flashed two cards simultaneously in a display of showmanship that’s definitely not UEFA-approved. The double-booking is about as cool as refereeing ever gets. Until you think about it for a bit. Refs don’t normally carry two yellow cards, so Metzen deliberately took a spare onto the pitch just on the off-chance that he’d get to book two players at once. And that, dear reader, makes him a very sad man.

David Bentley golazo

This is the highlight of Tottenham’s eight-goal spectacular with Arsenal last month. Ex-Gunner David Bentley takes one touch on the volley and lashes the ball in the net from the best part of 40 yards.

Not exactly hot of the press, I know, but there was an even better goal scored on Wednesday 29th October. This other strike was so good that I posted a video clip of it at the time and forgot all about Bentley’s wonder goal.

Rémi Mareval hit the back of the net for FC Nantes about an hour before Bentley scored at the Emirates. The Frenchman’s goal was an equally long-range effort, but there was no hint of dodgy goalkeeping from Manuel Almunia. Mareval’s pile-driver was unstoppable.

Sadly for Spurs fans, Tottenham couldn’t hold onto the early advantage Bentley provided. Arsenal responded strongly and played their way into a 3-1 lead. But Spurs, reinvigorated under Harry Redknapp, refused to roll over and the game finished in a 4-4 draw.
