Scott McDonald overcame his extra poundage in Saturday’s Glasgow derby at Ibrox, proving that you don’t need to be slim to blast the ball into the back of the net. Click below to watch the video.
The Australian striker won the game for Celtic with his half volley - the only goal of the match. McDonald was able to take the ball on his chest and turn, despite the close attendance of Rangers’ Kirk Broadfoot.
The 1-0 win gives the Hoops a seven-point lead at the top of the SPL.
Sunday afternoon saw big-spending Manchester City suffer the indignity of being the first Premiership team to lose to West Brom in 11 matches. The Blues’ only consolation in defeat was this impudent Felipe Caicedo strike.
At least, it would have been a consolation had the Premier League not marked it down as a Scott Carson own goal. The thinking seems to be that Caicedo’s backheel came off the post and struck Baggies keeper Carson on the back before going into the net. I can’t say I see it myself. The ball definitely took a deflection before it hit the woodwork, but did it really bounce off Carson? Maybe the Dubious Goals Committee will take a look.
Yesterday’s Chelsea-Bolton Premiership clash saw Portuguese midfielder Deco score his first club goal since the end of August. It was worth the wait. Take a look at the video.
Deco started the Chelsea attack which led to the goal. When the move broke down, he was lurking in the area to scissor-kick Michael Ballack’s header into the net. The spectacular volley sealed a 2-0 win for the Blues.
It’s strange how a goal drought that saw Deco score just one goal in three months - a penalty for Portugal against Denmark - could end with such an agile finish. He’ll be hoping for more in the midweek Champions League fixture against CFR Cluj.
The ‘96-’97 Premiership season ended with Manchester United winning their fourth league title in five years. They finished seven points clear of Newcastle United - too strong and too consistent for the opposition. But that didn’t stop them getting skelped 6-3 at the Dell. Matt Le Tissier scored the pick of the Southampton goals that day, chipping Peter Schmeichel from the edge of the area.
Although United also got to the semifinals of the Champions League that season, the Saints put more goals past them than any other team.
