Danny Cepero of the New York Red Bulls scored on his MLS debut at the weekend… He’s a goalkeeper. Despite the gloves, the man at the other end of the pitch isn’t.

What’s worse - playing football on a pitch with gridiron markings or being beaten from 81 yards? I suppose we wouldn’t have that measurement without the yard lines, so conceding from distance is the greater sin.

Columbus Crew keeper Andy Gruenebaum is not alone in suffering this fate. There’s a lot of bad goalkeeping about. An awful lot.

David Beckham’s overrated and overexposed. I don’t rate him at all. But credit where it’s due - he kept his cool when the chance presented itself. You’ll see more misses than goals from that sort of distance.

Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns shows off a touch that makes lots of professional footballers look clumsy. Crackerjack ball jugglers are not rare beasts, but there aren’t many with two NBA MVP titles to their name as well.

Martin Nash, Steve’s younger brother, played league football in England with Stockport County, Chester City and Macclesfield Town.
