Willie Young Saturday 7th February 2004 - never let it be said that this website isn’t topical. Celtic prepare to stroll out into the welcoming Tynecastle atmosphere for a Scottish Cup tie against Hearts.

Ignore the apprehensive hooped protagonists and concentrate on the referee, Mr Willie Young. Now retired from football, the beautiful game became a whole lot prettier when he blew his whistle for the last time.

Young’s agency describe their man as an “accomplished wit” and “raconteur”, but I can honestly say that this is the first time he’s made me laugh in a fifteen-year career as a top-flight official.
