Field goal

Danny Cepero of the New York Red Bulls scored on his MLS debut at the weekend… He’s a goalkeeper. Despite the gloves, the man at the other end of the pitch isn’t.

What’s worse - playing football on a pitch with gridiron markings or being beaten from 81 yards? I suppose we wouldn’t have that measurement without the yard lines, so conceding from distance is the greater sin.

Columbus Crew keeper Andy Gruenebaum is not alone in suffering this fate. There’s a lot of bad goalkeeping about. An awful lot.

Steady! It’s not that bad. I used to watch MLS on Five. I don’t know if they still show it.

I agree that playing on an American football pitch is sacrilege.

Are you on a nightshift or something? 4am is too late for football.
